The first 6 months of the year have been a busy time for the Numismatics Section. Aside from the bi-monthly meetings we’ve been identifying and cataloging 400+ coins bequeathed to the Société. These will, in time, be added to the Collection for research and study.
While identifying the coins we found numerous examples of the last pre-decimal coins from the 1950s/60s. As such we were able to make a set of the last British LSD coinage (5/- to a farthing, 10 coins) and the same with Jersey coins (5/-,3d and 1d, 3 coins). These, with the permission of the Société, were given to the education section of Jersey Heritage to use in their teaching.
In August, we will be assisting archaeologist Hervé Duval-Gatignol on the next excavation site by helping identify any potential coin finds.
