Alec is back in Jersey on a visit and has been invited to present to the Société by the Geology Section on his work in different countries, which will also include briefly demonstrating the application of the method of seismic monitoring using local Jersey recording stations.
Alec is currently working at Université Libre to Bruxelles in Belgium. He completed his Master’s in New Zealand and PhD in France, specialising in monitoring explosive volcanoes using seismic noise. He is now additionally working on the application of fibre optic technologies in subsurface monitoring, particularly in geothermal environments.
Summary of presentation
Understanding what happens beneath the Earth’s surface is crucial in many applications, from natural disaster preparedness to resource management. Thus, there is great interest in the development of cost-effective techniques for subsurface monitoring. One promising method makes use of natural seismic vibrations continuously recorded at the Earth’s surface. This energy (known as seismic noise) carries a signature of the subsurface conditions, capturing changes that provide a dynamic picture of hidden processes occurring below ground.
This presentation will examine the origins of this approach and its current applications, with a particular focus on its use in volcano monitoring. This represents a particularly challenging environment, where discriminating between volcanic and meteorological-induced changes is crucial for accurate and reliable monitoring. Additionally, I will briefly demonstrate the application of the method using local seismic stations.
Finally, we look towards the future, considering how recent advances (such as fibre optic technologies) may unlock the full potential of this method for broader subsurface monitoring.
